Bicyclist Hit by Motorist on West Jemez Road
A 58-year-old Los Alamos man riding his bicycle along West Jemez Road between the Emergency Operations Center and Fire Station 5 was hit from behind by an older model Chrysler Mini Van Monday.
The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m.
The bicyclist sustained severe injuries and was transported to Los Alamos Medical Center where he was immediately air lifted out.
He remains in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Albuquerque.
The man driving the Mini Van was uninjured, according to police.
Charges are pending the outcome of an investigation currently underway to determine how he happened to hit the bicyclist from behind.
“Alcohol does not appear to be a factor,” said Lt. Chuck Ney this morning.

Too bad a rich county with as many bikers as Los Alamos doesn’t have more options for safe biking. I also understand the driver of the van “never saw him.” Since the rider was thrown directly into the van’s windshield, this comment begs the question, “What were you doing while driving that you couldn’t see someone directly in front of you?.” How often do we have to have this kind of tragedy before we do something?
